Nick M. Joaquin Senior High School is one of the pioneer senior high schools in Quezon, City with a well-deserved reputation for delivering a high quality education programme. It was primarily established as a learning institution for students who moved up from nearest Junior High Schools such Pugad Lawin High School, Ismael Mathay Sr. High School, San Francisco High School, and Ernesto Rondon High School way back 2016. During that time, it was known as Senior High School within Toro Hills and it was dependent from Pugad Lawin High School. The school first opened on June 13, 2016 under the leadership of Dr. Edna Bañaga as the principal of Nick M. Joaquin Senior High School and Pugad Lawin High School. Nick M. Joaquin Senior High School offering Academic Track which included General Academic Strands and Humanities and Social Sciences and Technical Vocational Track which included Information and Communications Technology on Technical Drafting and Animation.

There were three legitimate pioneer senior high school teachers during the first year, namely Mr. Neil Bermundo, (Master Teacher 2), Joyce H. Cabiao, (Master teacher 2), and Ruth O. Gabiane, (Teacher 3). They were joined by Marjorie M. Reliquette, (Master Teacher 2) by August 2016. To complete the teaching force, Pugad Lawin lent junior high school teachers from the following areas: Math- Mrs. Riza Ramos/Mr. Ricofer Martinez; English- Mrs. Elvira B. Arevalo/Mr. Victor M. Makiraya, Jr. Science- Ms. Armela Monte; Filipino-Mrs. Israelita Perez; Social Science- Mr. Jeffrey N. De Guzman/Mr. Nomer Tabora and TVL- Ms. Jocelyn Cervito/My. Roy Secillano.

There were initially 159 grade 11 students enrolled at Nick M. Joaquin Senior High School, most of them came from Pugad Lawin High School. In 2016, the school was officially known as Senior High School within Toro Hills. It was housed in a 4 – storey, 8-room newly constructed building borrowed from Toro Hills Elementary School located within the compound of the same school. NMJSHS started with a 4-day class schedule where students come to school only four times a week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. In this schedule, classes started at 7am. and ended at 5pm. However, when there was a reshuffling of principals and Mr. Gilore Ofrancia became the principal, the class schedule was changed to what it is now, where students go to school five days in a week with shorter school hours from 7a.m. to 3p.m. The principal also utilized the 4 SHS teachers to hold ancillary positions. Discipline Officer- Neil Bermundo, Guidance Teacher- Marjorie M. Relliquette, In-Charged of Partnership- Ruth O. Gabiane and Registrar: Joyce H. Cabiao.

The first PTA meeting was held in November 2016 at Pugad Lawin High School Multipurpose Hall. It was carried out under the initiative of the principal with the help of Dr. Rodel Frias, the Assistant Principal and the SHS teachers/advisers. With the effort of Mr. Jeffrey N. De Guzman, the school was able to elect officers for its first student government in March 2017. Levi Rodulfo was elected as the first president of the SSG. The school year 2017-2018 welcomed a new assistant principal as well as new SHS teachers. Mrs. Irene SF. Canon took over as Assistant Principal in May 2017. The new teachers were the following: Mrs. Michelle A. Jumagdao – Math, Mr. Jeffrey N. de Guzman & Mr. Felix R. Peletina- Social Science, Mr. Mr. Gregorio De Polonia- Science, Mr. Minard B. Abenojar & Mrs. Elvira B. Arevalo – English and Mr. Arturo C. Baui – Filipino, Mr. Alvin C. Banal – Math/TVL. They were also joined by the new school registrar Mrs. Luisa Makiraya. With the leadership of Mrs. Irene SF. Canon, the first officers of the GPTA were elected in June 2017. Mr. Roberto Dela Cerna Sr. was elected as the first president of GPTA. Ms. Ruth Gabiane and Mr. Neil Bermundo sought transfer to schools near their home. The academic and non-academic positions were now occupied by the following: School Regstrar: Mrs. Luisa Makiraya, Guidance Teacher: Mrs. Marjorie M. Relliquette, Subject Coordinator: Ms. Joyce H. Cabiao and Property Coordinator/SSG Adviser/ Focal for Partneship: Mr. Jeffrey N. De Guzman. Nick M Joaquin Senior High School implemented school uniform during the school year 2017-2018. The uniform was designed by Jet Rivas, a student from General Academic Strand.

The school transferred into its own building on November 3, 2017. The building is located along Road. 19, Bahay Toro. The building was not yet fully completed but can already accommodate classes. Between 2017-2018, under the leadership of Mrs. Irene SF. Canon, the school became a recipient of an International Organization named Easecox Venus Team Philippines which donated 50 pcs. of brand new desktop computers., 500 pcs. Uratex Armchairs, 2 Aircons, 50 ceiling fans. During this period the school administrators utilized the use of classrooms. The school produced 2 computer laboratories, 1 Technical Drafting and Animation room, and a Science Laboratory. These magnificent new interactive classrooms were officially opened with the presence of International Visitors, School head, faculty members and students.

The next development to the school, under the new school head, Mrs. Elenita S. Ordovez, was the installation of a new school canteen, and lavatories and renovation of the principal’s office. The funds for this were from the MOOE. After her term came the complete refurbishment of the extension building which was completed during the year 2019. At the same time, an environmental area was being developed with the new school principal, Mr. Christopher V. Mondala. The latest project was the development of the school facade, school gate and school grounds. He also opened the social hall or the audio-visual room to add another dimension to students’ learning experiences. School programs were being held at Audio Visual Room. Nick M. Joaquin Senior High School is continually moving forward and there will always be new projects being considered in order to improve the facilities for the students, parents, teachers and administrators.
